Your pets need regular health care just like people do if they are going to stay healthy. Taking them to the veterinarian is not always something at the top of the priority list if they seem fine, but it is important.

Preventative Care

Every year you go to the doctor for a check-up, but that same checkup is not always something that people consider for their pets. They need to have health screenings and shots every year, and letting it go can be more expensive later if they get sick, then if the animal had seen the vet on time. Preventative care is the best way to catch a problem early before it becomes a large problem and expensive to deal with.

Pet Insurance

Some companies are now offering pet insurance for their employees, just like the insurance you can get for yourself or your family. The insurance will help cover these yearly costs, and if something major does come up, it may cover it. Like regular health insurance, there are specific things covered and a copay with the insurance, but if your dog falls down the stairs or off the bed, the insurance can help make the cost more manageable.

Some veterinarian clinics also have insurance plans that they offer to clients, essentially doing the same thing. The insurance typically has several tiers of coverage with premiums that reflect the tiers and the amount of coverage that each has. Some companies even tailor the plans to specific animals, such as cat plans, dog plans, and plans for animals like ferrets and birds. Talk to the provider to see what they recommend for your pet before you sign up for a plan so that you get the right one for your needs.

Emergency Care

Some veterinarians offer after-hours emergency care for your pets. If a dog or cat was injured badly, these vets offer services much like that of an emergency room. They bring the animal in, do x-rays, or give emergency care, but it comes at a cost. The emergency vets are typically more expensive than a visit during regular business hours. The services they offer are not typical though, so the cost reflects the service and convenience of them caring for your animal at two in the morning or on a Sunday afternoon. If you have a true emergency, it is worth paying a little higher price for the care and to keep your best friend healthy and happy.
