If you like French hounds and want a small one, you should choose a Basset Fauve de Bretagne. Below is more information about this breed so you can determine if it would be right for you. You can then find this dog from a breeder or through a dog rescue.

Their Temperament

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a small hound and hunting dog. They also make great pets for families. They are friendly dogs and are sweet and gentle. They make a great companion for someone living alone or for a family. These dogs are great if you have children as they will be gentle around them.

The Basset can be a stubborn dog, however, which you can help with training and using treats. You may notice they are shy around strangers but will come out of their shells once they get used to someone. You should know because this dog is a hunting dog, if they get a scent, they like they will try to follow it. Bassets are intelligent dogs and love to do tricks for their owners. Just make sure you have a treat in your pocket to reward your dog when they do a trick for you. These dogs will typically bark when they hear noises. Their bark is unique as it almost sounds musical.

Best Living Conditions

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is not hyper while indoors so will do fine if you live in an apartment. Once you take your Basset outside, however, they will run and play for hours if you allow them to. Because of this, if you live in an apartment, make sure you have an area to take your dog so they can run and play. If not, you can take them to a dog park.

If you have a home, fence in your backyard, and let your Basset out a few times a day to run and play. This will make them very happy and also will help keep them healthy.

Needed Exercise

Just like with any dog, Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppies need to have exercise to keep them healthy. You can do this by taking them on long walks each day. This will also give you exercise so you will stay healthy. Make sure your Basset does not pull on the leash or try to jump on you or other people. As stated above, if they get a scent while walking, they will pull you.

Take your dog with you when you leave if you visit a place where dogs are allowed. For example, most pet stores allow dogs. Some home improvement stores allow dogs as long as they are well-behaved.

Take your Basset Fauve de Bretagne puppy to the veterinarian as soon as you can after you get it. The vet will do a complete checkup to ensure your dog is healthy.
